Poha Berry in Japan

3 pohasWe just returned from the Tokyo International Gift Show and introduced Poha Berry Tea to the Japanese market. It was one year ago that I came up with the idea of the world’s first poha, aka cape gooseberry, tea.   It was a hot, muggy day in Asakusa and we stopped for shaved ice to cool off.  Outside the shop was a potted plant with a familiar cocoon like ornament hanging from its branches. Being niele (Hawaiian for curious), I took a closer look and sure enough it was a poha plant.

I love poha jam so I thought this would be a great bridge between the two cultures.  Poha in Japan is called hozuki and known as a decorative plant, not an edible. The look of amazement on some of the faces of the Japanese after telling them they are drinking hozuki tea was entertaining to say the least.

Poha Berry reminds me of a cross between raspberry and Fuji apple. The character of the tea is subtle so we went with a white and green tea blend that allows the taste to come through without overflavoring.   The mood of the tea is uplifting and refreshing.  It’s low in caffeine and makes a pleasant drink in the afternoon or evening.  The tea also goes great with dessert.  We did a lot of testing in this area I assure you.  Aloha Poha!
