Marumatsu Tea

Earlier this month, I was privileged to visit with Tatsuo Sano, Director of Marumatsu Tea Co. in Shizuoka, Japan. Marumatsu was founded in 1898 and manufactures Japanese tea products. They purchase raw ara-cha from surrounding growers, finish the tea and packages it for worldwide distribution.

Walking into their climate controlled storeroom was like a scene out of a James Bond movie. The facility holds 200 metric tons of tea at a constant 40 degrees (F) and was designed by the same manufacturer that makes freezers for the tuna fishing industry. Every tea we cupped was outstanding and well balanced but I have to say that day I drank the best hojicha I’ve ever tasted.

About The Leaf Lover
Aloha, my name is Byron Goo. I started our company in 1995 in my garage. Tea has taken me all over the world since then and I continue to be a student of the leaf and of life. The Leaf Lover is a way for me to share about my passion for tea and our small business. I wear many hats including CEO of the company but I think of myself simply as a tea maker.
